Next stop Herculaneum and Pompeii

Once we had recovered from jet lag, we headed to the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii.

Pompeii is a vast archaeological site near the coast of the Bay of Naples. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can freely explore.

Herculaneum is its little brother - much smaller but in many ways just as interesting and was our first stop:

Pompeii on the other hand is huge - we probably only explored 30% of the site and even in those areas only went into 50% of the buildings.
