Naples Sotterranea .... Heading underground

Naples is built layer upon layer out of the compacted volcanic ash and rock that Italians call tufo. Tufo is very soft and easy to dig and as a result Naples has huge areas of Sotterranea (underground) with over 450km of tunnels. We visited 3 different underground areas:

  • Naples Sotterranea (tunnels used originally by the Greeks to store and move water around and used as bomb shelters in WWII)

  • Catacombs of San Gennaro (the patron saint of Naples)

  • Ipogeo dei Cristallini of Naples (Greek burial chambers - Thérèse was in here element!)

Each was a very different experience!

In addition to the archaeological sites, the local Metro system has got in on the act and incorporated extensive Art into many of its metro stations. We visited 4 of them with cameras in hand to capture some of the art:
